Classes August - October Clay

 * These classes come with FREE three-hour Open Labs -- one for each week of class. Open Labs are only given for eight week classes. Please consult your instructor for dates and times.
Online registration closes three days prior to event start time. Afterward those interested may call ClaySpace at 630 393 2529 to inquire about availability. No refunds are given after the start of a given class session. There will be no classes held on Monday, Labor Day, September 3rd. Start and end dates are adjusted accordingly.

Ceramics - Beginning/Intermediate Ceramics *

Learn and explore the basics - from technique to design - with an eye towards raising your skills to the next level. whether it is learning centering and throwing simple forms on the wheel or learning combined forms and advanced glazing techniques, this class is for you.

Ceramics - Throwing on the Wheel *

You will be challenged to not only develop a personal style, but also an awareness of the entire process of creating functional pottery. Included will be demonstrations of the creation of simple forms (mugs, small bowls, and plates) along with more complex forms (covered bakers, large platters, and bowls) as well as slip trailing, sgraffito, and glaze formulation.

   Back to Basics Throwing*

In this beginning to intermediate class, you will learn the steps to throwing on the potter's wheel. We will prep the clay, center, raise the walls, and shape the pot. After basic skills are honed, move on to more complex forms, design, and glazing techniques.

Ceramics - Anything Can Happen *

This intermediate independent study focuses on students improving skills in areas of their choice. In addition to advising on how best to improve focus areas, Jean will demonstrate some of her personal favorites. This session is best suited to those already proficient in the basics (centering, pulling, trimming, etc) of wheel thrown ceramics. Questions before registering can be directed to

Ceramics - Hand Built and Sculptural *

Designed to expand your knowledge of the sculptural ceramic world, you will explore various techniques and artists to inspire you to create your own pieces of art. After learning the basics of hand building functional ware, the student may transition to sculptural hand building.

Get Muddy
Want to experience clay without a big commitment then this four week class is for you. You will work on a different project each week during the first three weeks that will involve the use of the slab roller while learning various hand building techniques. In the fourth week, you will glaze your work. Projects will be available for pick up two weeks after class ends. No open labs are offered with this class.

  Color and Clay*
Explore the joy of adding color as you work at the potter's wheel and hand building! A well versed instructor, in the use of colored clay slip, underglaze, and stain and glaze, will lead students to explore adding color to both functional and nonfunctional work. Work will be fired in the electric or gas soda kiln.

Hand Built Ceramics *
This class highlights the many exciting clay methods that do not incorporate the use of the potter's wheel, such as slab, coil, and pinch construction. Classes are structured around the experience level and goals of each student. New techniques will be presented each week as the student is guided in creating limitless variations in functional, and/or decorative art. The student will be exposed to a vast array of surface decoration options, as well as receive glazing instruction.

  Make it Use it!*
Sunday Fun Day! Throwing class for beginning and intermediate potters. The focus of this class will be on making usable, functional, well-crafted utilitarian pottery. Create your favorite coffee mug, your child's special cereal bowl, a Thanksgiving platter, or Fido's dog dish. Plus, there will be occasional cookies from my talented wife.

   Clay Sampler
Never tried clay before? Create something wonderful! Hand build using simple techniques. Some examples of a project are: mugs, small dishes with texture, trays with handles, or soup bowls. Wheel demo included. Your work will be ready for pickup in two weeks.

Leaf Workshop
Create a lovely soft slab leaf dish or bowl using leaves you bring from home. Bring a selection to offer more variety. Big leaves make great bowls. Decorate with underglaze. project will be glazed with clear by instructor and available for pickup in about a week. Instructor will also have leaves for your use.
